To feed and inspire the world – one can at a time.
Canstruction® is a unique international charity which hosts exhibitions and competitions of giant whimsical and wildly inventive sculptures made entirely out of full cans of food. After they are built, the teams of architects, engineers, and contractors display their structures to the public to compete for winning titles. At the end of the event, all food is donated to Oregon Food Bank.
Recognized for our commitment to hunger relief and helping communities strengthen local food systems, the Portland event has raised more than one million meals to help fight hunger in Oregon and Clark County, Washington.

How it Started
Canstruction® was founded in 1992 by Cheri Melillo and her colleagues from the Society for Design Administration (SDA). Cheri was first inspired by the notion of Canstruction® through trial competitions held in Denver, CO and Seattle, WA. Cheri created a Canstruction® chapter in New York and held the first official Canstruction® Competition in New York, NY on November 13, 1993.
Cheri’s vision was to unite the design, engineering and construction industry through a unique and fun medium that would provide canned food to hunger relief organizations. Cheri led Canstruction® for 17 years as volunteer President and Executive Director before her passing in December 2009. Nicholas Telesca is the active President and Executive Director of the national headquarters in Atlanta, GA.
Since its inception, Canstruction® has grown to become one of the largest and most consistent canned food contributors to food banks in the world. Canstruction® events have been held in over 150 cities worldwide donating over 25 million pounds of food to feed the hungry.
